Haridwar, located in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, is one of the most sacred cities in India and serves as the starting point of the famous Char Dham Yatra. The literal meaning of Haridwar is “Gateway to Lord Hari (Vishnu)”.
Known by ancient names such as Mayapuri, Kapilasthana, and Gangadwar, Haridwar has been a center of pilgrimage for thousands of years. According to Hindu scriptures and Puranas, it is here that the holy River Ganga enters the plains after descending from the Himalayas, making it one of the most sacred destinations for devotees and travelers alike.

One of the most iconic and sacred locations in Haridwar is Har Ki Pauri, a holy ghat on the banks of the River Ganga. According to Hindu mythology, during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the cosmic ocean), four drops of Amrit (nectar of immortality) fell on Earth at Prayagraj, Nashik, Ujjain, and Haridwar.
It is believed that one of these divine drops fell specifically at Har Ki Pauri, making it one of the holiest ghats in India. Thousands of pilgrims take a sacred dip here every day, believing that the holy waters of the Ganga cleanse sins and purify the soul.
The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri is one of the most mesmerizing spiritual experiences in India. The organized form of Ganga Aarti in Haridwar is believed to be older than the one performed in Varanasi.
Every evening, priests perform the ritual with large lamps, sacred chants, and devotional music as thousands of devotees gather along the ghats. The sight of hundreds of floating diyas on the river creates a magical and deeply spiritual atmosphere that every traveler must witness.
Built in the 11th century, it is considered a Siddhapeeth where devotees believe wishes are fulfilled. The ancient name of Haridwar, Mayapuri, originated from this temple. It is one of the few temples that have survived from the early history of the city.
Located on the Bilwa Parvat hill, the goddess is believed to fulfill the wishes of devotees. Visitors can reach the temple either by trekking up the hill or by taking the ropeway cable car, which offers beautiful views of Haridwar city and the Ganga.
Haridwar is home to one of India’s rare Pashupatinath temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The architecture resembles the famous Nepal temple and features multiple levels filled with beautifully carved idols of various Hindu gods and goddesses.
Located in Kankhal, this sacred place is associated with the story of King Daksha and Goddess Sati. It is believed that King Daksha performed a yajna here, making it one of the most significant mythological sites related to Lord Shiva.
