The Supreme Pilgrimage

Char Dham Yatra

Embark on the most sacred journey in the Himalayas. The Char Dham circuit of Uttarakhand encompasses four divine abodes—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—each offering a profound path to spiritual awakening, cleansing, and liberation.

01

Yamunotri

Yamunotri Temple

The Sacred Origin of River Yamuna

Yamunotri is considered the holy origin of the River Yamuna, revered as the daughter of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and the sister of Yama, the god of death. Originally built in 1839 by Maharaja Pratap Shah and later renovated by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur, the temple stands amidst majestic Himalayan mountains.

Inside, Goddess Yamuna is worshipped alongside her divine brother Dharmaraj (Yamraj). The Yamuna River is also deeply associated with Lord Krishna's pastimes in Braj, making it exceptionally sacred.

Surya Kund

A natural hot spring where devotees cook rice in cloth bags to offer as prasad.

Saptrishi Kund

The actual glacial source where the seven great sages performed intense penance.

Travel TipsTrek 6–7 km from Janaki Chatti. Photography is prohibited inside the temple. Complete your darshan before 3 PM to avoid afternoon rains.
02

Gangotri

Gangotri Temple

The Divine Origin of River Ganga

Revered as the origin of the holy River Ganga, Mother Ganga is worshipped across the three worlds (Triloka). According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance for thousands of years during the Satya Yuga to bring the Ganga down to Earth to liberate the souls of his ancestors.

When Ganga descended, her powerful flow could have destroyed the planet. To protect the Earth, Lord Shiva captured her in his matted locks. Upon Bhagirath’s request, Shiva gently released her, dividing into seven streams (Sapta Dhara).

Bhagirath Shila

The sacred stone where King Bhagirath meditated. It is here that he prayed for the descent of Mother Ganga to Earth.

Spiritual Significance

It is said that wherever Ganga flows becomes a sacred tirtha. Even the air that flows through the land of Gangotri is believed to be spiritually purifying.

03

Kedarnath

Kedarnath Temple

The Sacred Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva

Located high in the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of the most divine and spiritually powerful destinations in India. The word “Kedar” signifies a field of transformation, symbolizing the journey from ignorance to enlightenment.

Originally built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, the temple houses a unique triangular Shiva Lingam, representing the hump of the divine bull (Nandi) that Lord Shiva took form as to hide from the Pandavas.

Gaurikund

The 16 km trek starting point where Goddess Parvati performed intense penance.

Bhim Shila

The massive rock that stood firmly behind the temple, miraculously protecting it during the 2013 floods.

04

Badrinath

Badrinath Temple

The Divine Abode of Lord Vishnu

Referred to as “Bhu Vaikuntha” (Heaven on Earth), Badrinath is the ultimate destination of the Char Dham. According to legend, Lord Vishnu performed deep meditation here. Goddess Lakshmi, unable to see him suffer the extreme weather, took the form of a Badri (berry) tree to protect him. Pleased, he named the place Badrinath.

The idol of Badrivishal, made of sacred Shaligram stone, was rediscovered by Adi Shankaracharya in Narad Kund. The temple is worshipped by humans for six months and by divine beings (Devtas) during the winter.

Tapt Kund

A mysterious natural hot water spring (around 45°C) amidst freezing temperatures. Taking a purifying bath here is a crucial part of the pilgrimage.

Adi Kedar (Adikeshwar Mahadev)

The region was originally Lord Shiva's abode. Vishnu took the form of a crying child to acquire it. A visit to Badrinath is incomplete without paying respects to Shiva and Parvati here.
